The Northwest Side CDC, Chicago Cares, and Steinmetz High School are presenting two days of education, engagement, and creation that honors the tradition. With love, respect, and in partnership with the Belmont Cragin community guests will spend time hearing the backstory of Dia de los Muertos and the tradition of making ofrendas. Ofrendas, or altars, are arrangments honoring loved ones who have passed on. Though there are traditional items that are commonly placed on ofrendas, every ofrenda is special in its own way and often includes personalized elements that are unique to the individual(s) being honored.
Paired with speakers, artists, and artisans from Mexico and the Northwest Side of Chicago, this collaborative workshop will teach residents, volunteers, and visitors why Día de los Muertos and its traditions have such a cultural significance to the broader Mexican community, while building one community altar!
