A Community Connected

We’re a place-based nonprofit with roots in organizing. When we first rolled up our sleeves in 2003, it was alongside older adults concerned about affordable housing and predatory lending. Since then we’ve added youth, parents, and immigration issues to our organizing agenda. So alongside our direct housing and financial services, we’re committed to helping you grow as a leader and organizer in your community.

Youth Leadership Council

We empower youth to be change-makers and leaders in their community. Our Youth Leadership Council provides a safe, positive, consistent space for students to grow as young organizers, receive academic and emotional support, and make meaningful peer connections. Our current focus is improving transportation infrastructure—especially biking.

Parent and Education Organizing

Drawing largely from members in our Parent Mentor Program, we organize parents around issues facing our neighborhood public schools. Recent issues we’ve organized around include building a new home for Belmont Cragin Elementary School, preventing the expansion of charter schools, and advocating for critical funding for our Parent Mentor Program.

Homeowners United

Our organization was founded in the years leading up to the 2008 housing market collapse. At that time, we organized around big bank accountability, predatory lending, and housing affordability. Today, the NWC remains active in the fight to create and preserve affordable housing, and our Homeowners United committee organizes around property tax reform.
